From Kalliannassa
I've never been particularly aroused during my periods, and not particularly against the notion either. When I was in college and had a single room/ apt style dorm I didn't care so much about the mess as it was all containable in my own personal space. Didn't do it during my period in my boyfriend's beds though. (Yes that is one guy through different living spaces).
Since my fiance' now husband moved in with me, it's never really been something we did. Partly because we both love to stay and cuddle afterwards and don't want to jump right in the shower, partly because we now own nice mattresses and don't want to risk being wrong about catching the mess.
Neither of my past nor partner have given me oral sex during my period, and I don't really want it. The smell of menstrual blood isn't bad, but nothing I'd want in my mouth so I don't ask them to. They've never complained about missing out either.
From Lilith
Personally I rather not have sex on my period. I have had sex on my period but I find that it is entirely to wet for me to feel anything at all. I like to feel every sensation I don't use lube even at the worst of times so basically having sex while on the rag is a drag. It is messy and I can't feel a thing. Besides that I have a one day period so any many can wait at least that long. (I know, I know, you are all jealous)
I have found though that I am extremely turned on though while I am bleeding. Up to a week total. Which I guess is the normal period time for most women. I also have instead of having vaginal sex had anal and it was extremely pleasurable. Of course, I made sure that my string was tucked up and unseeable. I mean there is nothing like a string to turn one off. I have also received oral during my period though it wasn't the full range of cunnilingus that was normal. Basically the guy sucked my clit and licked clear of my actual entrance or rather exit.
Whenever I start dating someone new I pretty much know how to tell that person that I can't. I have on the rare occasion had to tell I guy I couldn't stay the night because it was that time of the month. The smart men say, oh, that doesn't matter, I still want to see you. or say some other thing that lets you know it isn't for just a piece of ass that they want to see you. Even though you and I both know that they are disappointed and only wanted you to come over for that piece of ass. Period.
From WD
I have always preferred frankness when it comes to all bodily functions, including menstruation. I'm not grossed out at all by a woman's period. Well, maybe used pads or tampons would bother me, but women are mostly discrete about that. I've had sex with women during their periods and it was fine. It seemed to limit changes in positions as once I inserted my penis I tended to want to keep it in, partly not wanting to see the blood and partly wanting to keep the mess to a minimum. Some of my lovers have preferred that I use a condom during their period, and to follow sex with an immediate shower.
My wife generally prefers not to have intercourse during her period, but we will sometimes because she finds it relieves cramps and the stress or moodiness that she sometimes experiences. For the most part, when my wife is having her period we do something else other than intercourse. She will keep her panties on and rub her clit on my tailbone, kind of a reverse doggie style. She will come that way and then play with my bottom—that is, lick my anus and/or insert a lubricated finger and take me from behind while I masturbate, in kind of a role reversal. She's "the man" and I'm "the girl." So I don't miss intercourse when she's having her period because we share this whole other kind of pleasure.
From Mansa
In my case, closer I get to having my menstrual period, more easily aroused I am. Sexual urges are strongest 3-5 days before the periods start and almost completely vanish by 2nd or 3rd day of bleeding. I do not really have much of libido from that time to until after the ovulation. I wonder how many other women have same experience.
I sometimes enjoyed sex during menstrual period when my husband was willing but the enjoyment vanished when I saw all the bloody mess on him and me. Tried with a Tampon on, and towel to catch stuff but it just was not as good as one during 'clean' time.
From Rob
When (back in the 1970s) my wife had periods sex during the week was impossible due to the migraines she suffered during periods. She was a bear with a sore head but immediately before the period she'd be very horny and in those few days we would fuck three or four times a day then, bang, nothing. Then she'd come out of the depression and almost as an 'I'm sorry' she suck me off or invite me to fuck her ass.
When the period finally finished we'd be back to regular sex but both of us looked forward to those days just before her next period was due, when she got so horny she couldn't get fucked enough, her sexual appetite getting bigger to the point we went to a few swingers parties for a year or so.
To finish the story we eventually had children, my wife had a hysterectomy in her early forties and despite no more periods, she remained very horny, we became swingers again for a long time, before losing interest in the lifestyle.

The first couple of days my flow is heavy and the cramps are really bad. I'll masturbate to help with the cramps, but I don't really want anyone touching me and I'm just really selfishly concerned with my own orgasms. But after that, towels can absorb any mess and I recently have been using a menstrual cup (such as the one made by Instead) as an alternative to tampons. I haven't had a chance to try it during sex yet, so I can't say how effective it is.
I'm pretty frank about it. Recently, a new partner and I were about to get together for the first time, but I was scheduled to have my period during that time. So I just told him that I would probably have my period when we discussed our plans. It was after the first couple of days, so I would have been ok with it, but he opted to wait. I think mostly because he really wanted to pleasure me orally and it is a bit riskier when a woman is menstruating. Plus, in my 3 decades of menstruating, I've never put my mouth on the fluids, so I wouldn't expect a guy to do so! It was worth the wait.
From Pete
My first wife an I did the deed when ever, I loved to lick her pussy and she loved it too. SSSoooo sometimes it was a little early/late. When she told me her lesbien lover liked to lick up her flow I realized I was not were I should be.
I do not mind the blood, just don't care to taste it.
From Dawn
As much as I love sex, I don't fuck vaginally during my period. Tried it once and didn't enjoy that tacky slipperiness. I do however, suck my hubby's cock the whole week long. At night I use a tampon and he takes my asshole.
From Connie
Vaginal sex during periods is a no-no. I'm not alone, none of my girlfriends indulge during their periods. But I'm normally very horny during periods, my breasts are full of milk, my nipples very responsive, so sex with my husband continues nightly, a mix of blow jobs or him in my ass.
As an experiment we did invite one of my girlfriends over when she and I had our periods at the same time. She and I had a great time, fully satisfied, but hubby was a bit of a performing seal, a real stud and left totally shattered!
From Catherine
I'm a very heavy bleeder, so intercourse for the first two days is out. I do like masturbating and being masturbated during this phase, as the orgasms help a lot with the cramps.
I've heard that some people can use a diaphragm during this time, that it's really excellent for holding back the flow. I don't have a diaphragm so I've never tried it. I used a sponge once but my flow was too heavy for it to remain effective (it held for about fifteen minutes).
My libido dips during the third and fourth day, so even though the flow has lessened I'm not as interested. Around the sixth day of my cycle (after the bleeding has ceased) I get a surge in that lovin' feeling. So the wait is worth it!
From Doug
I prefer frank talk to euphemisms for all bodily matters. My long term wife was on the pill and had very short light
periods since before we were married. When we got married we got a whole set of maroon towels. She didn't have period for two years after going off the pill. Then with early menopause after 3 kids and 2 years of nursing for each, a lot of periods were skipped. My girlfriend had an hysterectomy before I came along. At this point I'm not likely to get much experience along these lines unless it's with a much younger woman.
From Lexi
I'll be honest on this an say, I've never had a guy take me while on my period. I've had numerous friends tell me they enjoy it but during my period I'm not in the mood for full sex. I do enjoy it the day I'm supposed to start because it feels good, but once I'm flowing...forget it.
I do enjoy being played with and teased during that time and have actually gotten off from just the teasing. Some women are more sensitive to touch during that time than others but each person is different. I say try anything that works for you...it's the reason we go exploring in the first place.
From Anonymous
This guy really misses his wife's flow taken by surgery before we married, but she seems indifferent. I've had lovers that relished their flow and delighted to share it with me, others more perplexed that I would want it.
In my book there's nothing more erotic than having woman drip into my mouth and then suck more from her lips--ah, memories. I guess that's why we keep on having birthdays!
From TMS
Isn't this why they make dark colored towels? Works wonders for cramps too. My ex likened it to "a velvet lined box". Nice thought, don't you think?
From Anonymous
My partner and I have been together for over 20 years, and our practice in this regard has varied. The first time this issue arose, we'd been together for a few months. I started one night and didn't bother telling him. I thought, well, it's just a very light flow and who cares. During sex he noticed and was startled for a moment, thought he'd hurt me or something. In retrospect I should have warned him! A bit awkward. Wish I'd had a "protocol" to consult back then.
After that, we'd regularly have sex during menstruation, just put a towel down for the mess and shower after. In those early days of the relationship, our sex was very frequent and abstaining for days didn't happen very often.
The extra lubrication made for an extra slippery experience which we both enjoyed. To tell the truth though, my libido is never very high during my period; it peaks just before and just after (and is fairly strong the rest of the month as well)
As time passed, we stopped having sex during my period. For one, we tended to have sex less often, not every day, and waiting 4 days or so was not impossible. (I agree that the wait makes for better sex after the fast!) For another, the mess was a hassle. For yet another, I could take it or leave it at that time. I suppose some of it is psychological (feeling messy and not terribly sexy, though I don't have hang-ups about it overall) and some, MOST, is physical (I don't have any major symptoms, but I tend to feel tired and bloated. I just don't feel like having an orgasm then. It is almost like my body is resting and preparing for my next big libido surge, which comes as the end of my flow approaches.)
One note: We enjoy oral sex a lot, but he has never performed cunnilingus on me during my period, nor would I want or ask him to. Just our preference.
From John
I prefer frankness, and I suspect most men do. Menstrual meds and products are in the public eye, no secrets there, and it really is not a good idea to use euphemisms about something that is so obviously part of being feminine.
Call me old fashion (I'm 26!), but I like the idea of abstaining from sex during a women's period. First, yes, I'm squeaked about sex and blood. And second,I find sex after a period of abstinence is incredibly hot. It's like days of foreplay, especially if we cuddle, indulge in casual sexual touches during the day, sleep nude. All that leads up to some very fine sex.
From Oxartes
We don't have sex during my wife's period. Orthodox Jewish couples have no physical contact of any kind during the 5 days of the wife's menstrual flow and for seven days afterwards.
From TreSart
Well, being a lesbian, the period thing has never bothered me. Amazingly, women I've been with have had no problem either. Now, if my flow is extremely heavy, the last thing I want is a woman to do anything, but if moderate to light, I have no problem.
On a side note, some women like to play with the tampon string, slowly pulling it out. I think that is so fucking hot.
I feel vulnerable during my period. Not only are my emotions all over the place, but there's also the whole bloating thing.
From David
Old prostitute's trick: Just douche and insert a makeup sponge against the cervix to catch any blood. Women in the brothels (I'm from Nevada) used to work three weeks and get one off, and everyone assumed that one week was during their period. But they simply used this trick, so they could enjoy their week off!
From Volponia
Way back when I still had a period, it was a non-issue after I outgrew one-night stands. I never had a lover who claimed to be grossed out by sex during my period. In fact, a couple relished it all the more, including cunnilingus; military types called it 'earning your blood wings,' a wry salute to the practice of slamming the jump wings into a newly qualified parachutist's chest.
In general, the flow seemed to slow down during sex and a nice big (dark-colored) bath towel under the hips was all that was required.
From Sandaidh
My experience, way back when I had both periods and a partner, was completely the opposite. He wanted nothing to do with me at that time. And to be honest, I was usually so damned miserable, I wasn't the least bit interested in anything sexual. So, what it comes down to is "different strokes for different folks."
From remittance girl
I think I might be a little insensitive on this one. I've never really understood the magnitude with which some people view the problem. It's not as if sex isn't gooey anyway.
Long term or one-night stands, my response is the same: I'm bleeding like a stuck pig, but I'm horny as hell. So, I've gotta warn you, this is going to be good - really good - but messy.
On a practical level - this is the perfect time for sex in the shower. If you absolutely insist on horizontal, shower curtains work real good.
