A Small Piece of Real Life

A man sits at lunch with his wife at a table near the window.  Across the room a girl drinks coffee with a group of friends.

Their eyes find each other's gaze, lock on a moment too long.  He admires the fullness of her lips, the height of her cheekbones.  She senses something about him in the set of his shoulders, the movement of his hands.

When he goes to the counter to pay, she stands behind him in the queue, a little closer than would be normal.  They are acutely aware of each other; their nostrils flare unwittingly, catching the primal clues of their bodies.  How is it possible that no one else can hear the thumping of their hearts?

For the rest of the day he is short-tempered with his wife; the girl's friends wonder why she has become distant.

They never see each other again.  In a small piece of his mind he lives with her in constant erotic bliss.  A little bit of her soul is trapped in a café queue forever.
